The Old Dock of Kaunas Reservoir

The first thing you will reach after arriving at Kaunas Reservoir is the old dock. The air is crisp here. You can choose whether to take one of the ships and sail to enjoy the landscape or stay on the shore, go to the beach, or visit Pažaislis Monastery. In all cases, an escape from the busy city is guaranteed. 

During the warmer months, from May till September, and sometimes even until October, take a boat tour to enjoy the views over the Reservoir up to the Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kruonis. On weekends, you can sail to Rumšiškės or even Birštonas. Visitors are amazed at the many beautiful places they can see just in few hours. These include the Mergakalnis Escarpment, Juniper Valley, the islands of birds, hillforts, and the sunset over Pažaislis Monastery. And this is just the beginning. Captains of the boats will gladly tell you of the changes to the landscape after building the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant dam, about villages which were left underwater, and thedangerous rocky shoals in the old channel of the Nemunas called the "Devil's Bridge". Although the basin of Kaunas Reservoir was filled with water only in 1959, the history of Nemunas River shipping and the hillforts go back several millenniums. The construction of the dam on the Nemunas gave rise to the formation of new landscapes on its coasts and continues today. 

If you decide explorethe Reservoir from the shore, you will find ships that spend the winter at the dock. The shore from the side of Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant is planted with maples that turn into golden colours in autumn. You can see the Vieškūnai Hillfort on the other side of the Reservoir. This is the reason why this shore has been one of the most popular places for photo shoots for years in Kaunas. The dock was built here in the 1970s. This was a time when the Nemunas and the Reservoir were humming with shipping activities. By the end of the Soviet times, the shipping activities were suspended and later renewed in the twenty-first century.
